„Charme, not Charmes. It's not Burgundy, it's Douro, but you can love it for the same reasons. Last year, Dirk Niepoort released his 2008, from a cool vintage that allowed him to strip the Douro to its essence, a wine without heat, with an energy and hidden power that captured the Vale de Mendiz in liquid form. He was justifiably proud of that wine, crushed from whole clusters in the round stone lagars of the old Sandeman museum in Pinhão, which he's recently taken over as a working vinification center. The 2009 may be a more impressive achievement, given the heat spikes of the vintage in August. My notes on the flavors of the wine cover an entire column, but taste it and you can make up your own. It was immediately apparent in a tasting of 40 Douro reds that this was Charme, from the delicate ruby color and the refinement of the tannins, the silken texture and that androgynous structure of great Burgundy that's masculine but svelte: Niepoort's emancipation from the bondage of the superripe, the thick and the dense. Enlightenment in the Douro.”
