„The 2011 Batuta is a vintage that Niepoort thinks is his best ever. He may be right, but this needs to show some progress to get there. In the meanwhile, it is certainly my favorite in some time, some recent vintages seeming a bit overly shy, granting that this bottling is never intended to be anything but understated. Sourced from a mixture of old-vines vineyards (70 and 100 years), this vintage puts it together while still maintaining its trademark signatures – elegance and complexity to come. Aged for 22 months in French barriques, only 25% new, this shows beautiful fruit, its typical, graceful presentation and fine structure. The tannins here are better integrated than on its Redoma sibling also reviewed this issue (not that Redoma is unbalanced in the slightest), but it seems very lively, the fruit expressive and lifted, completely delicious while subtly concentrated. There is a touch of oak here, but not much and it should integrate easily and well. The only thing this is missing is the complexity that I’ve often admired most in this bottling. That will take some time. In the meanwhile, if you like them more on the Burgundian side and more on the subtle side, this is the Douro wine for you...”
