„The 2009 REDOMA Tinto, is a typical old vines (60-120 years) Douro blend from north facing vineyards, aged in a mixture of large and small French oak barrels for 21 months. Like most of Niepoort-s reds this issue, this seems surprisingly crisp this year, hardly seeming like a 2009 at all. It follows the Vertente model, while adding a little intensity and a better finish but keeping a primary and graceful feel to it. It does have some tartness, along with refined and well integrated tannins. Clean and grapey, it is also refreshing and sunny. Considering how much I-ve been liking Redoma of late, this seems a step short-still quite nice, but not as distinguished as some recent vintages. After holding it open for awhile, I did get some sense it might pull itself together and I leaned up a bit, but it definitely needs to show a bit more in the cellar. Give it a couple of years to settle down, even if seems very approachable. There were 18,500 bottles produced. Drink now-2020.

Niepoort's output, largely from old vines and high altitude, always has a certain refinement and elegance in common, even in the biggest vintages. It is an interesting aspect of this warm weather wine region. In 2009, a big vintage for most of the rest of the region, the reds seem generally restrained and quite crisp, a little eccentric compared to the typical Douro output in this year. Normally, I feel Niepoort does extremely well in the bigger vintages. This year, I am less sure.”
